If other civilizations have been actively spreading their religions, they'll eventually suppress the one that lost its Holy City. Therefore, the only way to completely wipe out a religion short of capturing every city that follows it and purging it from all of them at the same time with Inquisitors is to capture and remove the religion from the Holy City, then make sure that no two cities within 10 tiles of each other follow that religion as a majority religion. Regardless of what else happens, the Holy City can never regain its former status, so it won't automatically get followers back like it will if you use a Missionary or a Great Prophet against it. It's possible for followers of the removed religion to return, but only if at least one other city within a 10-tile radius still has it as a majority religion (which causes it to exert pressure). The only way to keep a religion squashed is to keep buying Inquisitors in the Holy City, just to illeminate the religion as it crops up, or play on the One-City Challenge, which is the only way to destroy capitols (When in One-City, ALL captured cities are automatically destroyed upon capture, including capitols and city-states). The religion will still keep cropping up in the holy city. The only way to officially kill a religion is to send am inquisitor to it's holy city and remove it.Īctually, that isn't permanent.
